Leading the new brand implementation for a global innovation firm

Project Overview

Board of Innovation hired me to help the organization in its crucial rebranding process, and take a leading role in the implementation of the new brand across all company’s activities and touchpoints.

After rapid growth in 2020, the firm sought to clarify its brand position, shifting from an innovation facilitation company to a full-fledged global innovation consultancy. This brand refresh was developed in collaboration with DesignStudio, resulting in a new strategic positioning and a visual language that captured BOI’s new direction: Make what life needs next.

I was brought in during the final phases of the collaboration with DesignStudio to oversee the transition between the brand definition and its implementation. As Senior Graphic Designer, I led Board of Innovation rebranding implementation by overseeing the redesign of all main touchpoints and visual assets, while also championing brand adoption across the organization. This included managing a small team of designers, running workshops, coaching teams, and supervising materials to ensure brand integrity. Additionally, I consulted on design and research projects across all continents, contributing directly to BOI’s mission of delivering impactful innovation.

Once the rebranding was complete, I designed BOI’s key marketing campaigns for the following year.

Overview of the Board of Innovation rebranding project, showcasing brand visuals and creative direction by DesignStudio, implementation by Fabio Besti Interdisciplinary Design
DesignStudio provided a rich brand manual and plenty of applications examples. Part of my work was to build on the creative direction set, expand, implement and systematize the brand identiy system. This page will focus on materials designed by me, but will contain also several designs created originally by DS.

Reinventing Board of Innovation’s corporate image

Board of Innovation rebranding implementation started by defining a new corporate image, meant to extend seamlessly from digital channels to print materials and physical spaces.

On one side, I designed essential stationary items, including business cards and letterhead templates, to reflect the brand’s visual language in all formal communications. On the other side, we extended this same brand identity into BOI’s office environments, incorporating graphic devices that brought the brand to life within the physical space.

BOI merch design

Driving a sense of belonging and brand advocacy

Key to the Board of Innovation rebranding success was fostering a process of internal brand adoption. This involved the complete design of a curated merchandise package, delivered to the 100+ BOIers working remotely around the world, and to the new hires as a welcome set. This was instrumental in developing a powerful sense of belonging and excitement towards the new brand. Team members became BOIers, brand advocates with one common goal: Make what life needs next.

All the items were developed in collaboration with Merchery.

Branded content at scale

Decks and ready-to-use templates

Structuring and designing compelling presentation materials, pitch decks, client delivery and communication templates was essential to successfully engage external stakeholders and achieve the brand positioning set with the Board of Innovation rebranding strategy.

Creating communication material is a shared responsibility across all roles and levels in the company. It was therefore crucial to design an extensive and modular set of ready-to-use templates and graphic material in Google Suite apps. These assets were essential for streamlining day-to-day workflows in a global, agile, remote-first, company.

Some of the outputs include: company pitch deck, proposal templates, case study repository, deliverable templates, charts & graphs templates, letterheads for all regions, spreadsheets for accounting 
and clients administration

Homepage and main pages

As the primary channel where services and capabilities are communicated, the website redesign was key for the strategic aspects of the Board of Innovation rebranding. DesignStudio (DS) set the creative direction by providing initial design samples for key pages; I worked with the webmaster and the rebranding team to structure the sitemap, designing key pages and reusable modules, for both desktop and mobile versions.

Case studies redesign

Communicate how BOI drives meaningful worldwide

Case studies were probably the most challenging elements of the website redesign, being key tools to demonstrate BOI’s expanded capabilities and success. By bechmarking competing innovation consultancies and gathering inputs from internal stakeholders, we crafted a storytelling format effectively highlighting how BOI drives innovation for its clients.

Innovation tools ecosystem

The UI/UX redesign of the complete BOI innovation methodology and toolbox

Board of Innovation has the world’s largest open-source innovation toolbox.

I led the complete redesign of its tools, rethinking their layout, UI & UX based on insights received by consultants and company’s clients. In 3 months, over 70 tools had been recreated, both in digital (Miro) and printable (PDF) versions

Innovation tools are used during projects and interactive workshops with clients, and are developed first-hand by innovation consultants and business designers. To discover the right solutions for tools redesign, interviews and co-creation sessions with internal stakeholders were conducted.

To optimize user experience, ensure brand alignment, and streamline new tools’ creation and management, it was essential to design a comprehensive design system, complete with reusable UI modules and extensive Miro design guidelines to handle existing tools or create new ones from scratch

Innovation guides and reports

Spread innovation culture worldwide

BOI publishes regularly freely downloadable innovation guides and reports, containing insights, methods and frameworks, discussed by industry experts and innovation consultants. I worked with different teams inside the company to redesign all existing documents, and create several new ones, optimizing for both print and digital fruition. 

For printing I managed the relationship with printing services and overseen all phases of production in all countries BOI operates.

Social Media Identity

Beyond driving innovation for clients, BOI strongly emphasizes fostering and sharing innovation culture both internally and externally. This made social media a key component of the Board of Innovation rebranding strategy. We developed the new brand identity to be bold, direct, and highly adaptable to fast-paced digital environments, ensuring it could effectively engage audiences across various platforms.

Given the organization’s strong social and cultural focus, digital communication is an intensive and strategic activity. To support this, a comprehensive brand system was developed, including a wide range of social media templates and ready-to-use Figma graphics. This allowed the marketing and communication team to scale their efforts efficiently while maintaining a strong and recognizable visual identity.
